Affirmation of Faith
from I Corinthians 15:1-6 & Colossians 1:15-20 UMH 888
Leader:
This is the good news
which we have received,
in which we stand,
and by which we are saved:
People:
Christ died for our sins,
was buried,
was raised on the third day,
and appeared first to the women,
then to Peter and the Twelve,
and then to many faithful witnesses.
We believe Jesus is the Christ,
the Anointed One of God,
the firstborn of all creation,
the firstborn from the dead,
in whom all things hold together,
in whom the fullness of God
was pleased to dwell
by the power of the Spirit.
Christ is the head of the body, the church,
and by the blood of the cross
reconciles all things to God. Amen.
Worship through Song
I Sing The Almighty Power Of God UMH 152
Verse 1
I sing the almighty power of God,
that made the mountains rise,
that spread the flowing seas abroad,
and built the lofty skies.
I sing the wisdom that ordained
the sun to rule the day;
the moon shines full at God's command,
and all the stars obey.
Verse 2
I sing the goodness of the Lord,
who filled the earth with food,
who formed the creatures thru the Word,
and then pronounced them good.
Lord, how Thy wonders are displayed,
where'er I turn my eye,
if I survey the ground I tread,
or gaze upon the sky.
Verse 3
There's not a plant or flower below,
but makes Thy glories known,
and clouds arise, and tempests blow,
by order from Thy throne;
while all that borrows life from Thee
is ever in Thy care;
and everywhere that we can be,
Thou, God, art present there.
Congregational Prayer & Lord's Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
forever. Amen.
O Wondrous Sight! O Vision Fair UMH 258
Verse 1
O wondrous sight! O vision fair
of glory that the church shall share,
which Christ upon the mountain shows,
where brighter than the sun he glows!
Verse 2
From age to age the tale declares
how with the three disciples there
where Moses and Elijah meet,
the Lord holds converse high and sweet.
Verse 3
The law and prophets there have place,
two chosen witnesses of grace;
the Father's voice from out the cloud
proclaims his only Son aloud.
Verse 4
With shining face and bright array,
Christ deigns to manifest that day
what glory shall be theirs above
who joy in God with perfect love.
Verse 5
And faithful hearts are raised on high
by this great vision's mystery;
for which in joyful strains we raise
the voice of prayer, the hymn of praise.
Scripture Reading
Matthew 17:1-9 (NRSV) [Read in Context]
1Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain, by themselves. 2And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became bright as light. 3Suddenly there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. 4Then Peter said to Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you wish, I will set up three tents here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.
5While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!
6When the disciples heard this, they fell to the ground and were overcome by fear. 7But Jesus came and touched them, saying, Get up and do not be afraid.
8And when they raised their eyes, they saw no one except Jesus himself alone.
9As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus ordered them, Tell no one about the vision until after the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.
The word of God for the people of God.
All: Thanks be to God!

Verse 1
Holy Spirit, light devine,
shine upon this heart of mine;
chase the shades of night away,
turn the darkness into day.
Verse 2
Let me see my Savior's face,
let me all His beauties trace;
show those glorious truths to me
which are only known to Thee.
Verse 3
Holy Spirit, joy devine,
dwell within this heart of mine;
yield a sacred, settled peace,
let it grow and still increase.
Ending
Come down, divine love.
Doxology
Praise God, From Whom All Blessings Flow UMC 95
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
praise Him, all creatures here below;
praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
Amen.
Confirmation
Brothers and sisters in Christ:
Through the Sacrament of Baptism
we are initiated into Christ's holy Church.
We are incorporated into God's mighty acts of salvation
and given new birth through water and the Spirit.
All this is God's gift, offered to us without price.
Through confirmation, and through the reaffirmation of our faith,
we renew the covenant declared at our baptism,
acknowledge what God is doing for us,
and affirm our commitment to Christ's holy Church.
PRESENTATION OF CANDIDATES
I present Mallory Vandercook and Cole Vandercook for confirmation.
RENUNCIATION OF SIN AND PROFESSION OF FAITH
For the confirmands:
On behalf of the whole Church, I ask you:
Do you renounce the spiritual forces of wickedness,
reject the evil powers of this world,
and repent of your sin?
Do you accept the freedom and power
God gives you to resist evil, injustice,
and oppression in whatever forms
they present themselves?
Do you confess Jesus Christ as your Savior,
put your whole trust in His grace,
and promise to serve Him as your Lord,
in union with the Church
which Christ has opened to people
of all ages, nations, and races?
According to the grace given to you,
will you remain faithful members
of Christ's holy Church
and serve as Christ's representatives
in the world?
For the congregation:
Do you, as Christ's body, the Church,
reaffirm both your rejection of sin
and your commitment to Christ?
All:
We do.
Will you nurture one another
in the Christian faith and life
and include these persons
now before you in your care?
All:
With God's help
we will proclaim the good news
and live according to the example of Christ.
We will surround these persons
with a community of love and forgiveness,
that they may grow in their trust of God,
and be found faithful
in their service to others.
We will pray for them,
that they may be true disciples
who walk in the way that leads to life.
Let us join together
in professing the Christian faith
as contained in the Scriptures
of the Old and New Testaments:
Do you believe in God the Father?
All:
I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth.
Do you believe in Jesus Christ?
All:
I believe in Jesus Christ,
His only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died,
and was buried;
He descended to the dead.
On the third day He rose again;
He ascended into heaven,
is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and will come again
to judge the living and the dead.
Do you believe in the Holy Spirit?
All:
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic* church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting.

Benediction and Closing Hymn
Go, Make of All Disciples UMH 571
Verse 1
Go, make of all disciples.
We hear the call, O Lord,
that comes from thee, our Father,
in thy eternal Word.
Inspire our ways of learning
through earnest, fervent prayer,
and let our daily living
reveal thee everywhere.
Verse 2
Go, make of all disciples,
baptizing in the name
of Father, Son, and Spirit,
from age to age the same.
We call each new disciple
to follow thee, O Lord,
redeeming soul and body
by water and the Word.
Verse 3
Go, make of all disciples.
We at thy feet would stay
until each life's vocation
accents thy holy way.
We cultivate the nature
God plants in every heart,
revealing in our witness
the master teacher's art.
Verse 4
Go, make of all disciples.
We welcome thy command.
Lo, I am with you always.
We take thy guiding hand.
The task looms large before us;
we follow without fear;
in heaven and earth thy power
shall bring God's kingdom here.
