Affirmation of Faith
Methodist Social Affirmation UMH 886
Leader:
We believe in God, creator of the world and of all people;
and in Jesus Christ, incarnate among us,
who died and rose again;
and in the Holy Spirit,
present with us to guide, strengthen, and comfort.
All:
We believe;
God, help our unbelief.
Leader:
We rejoice in every sign of God's kingdom:
in the upholding of human dignity and community;
in every expression of love, justice, and reconciliation;
in each act of self-giving on behalf of others;
in the abundance of God's gifts
entrusted to us that all may have enough;
in all responsible use of the earth's resources.
All:
Glory be to God on high;
and on earth, peace.
Leader:
We confess our sin, individual and collective,
by silence or action:
through the violation of human dignity
based on race, class, age, sex, nation, or faith;
through the exploitation of people
because of greed and indifference;
through the misuse of power
in personal, communal, national, and international life;
through the search for security
by those military and economic forces
that threaten human existence;
through the abuse of technology
which endangers the earth and all life upon it.
All:
Lord, have mercy;
Christ, have mercy;
Lord, have mercy.
Leader:
We commit ourselves individually and as a community
to the way of Christ:
to take up the cross;
to seek abundant life for all humanity;
to struggle for peace with justice and freedom;
to risk ourselves in faith, hope, and love,
praying that God's kingdom may come.
All:
Thy kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven. Amen.

Love Divine, All Loves Excelling UMH 384 (Charles Wesley)
Verse 1
Love divine, all loves excelling,
joy of heaven, to earth come down;
fix in us thy humble dwelling;
all thy faithful mercies crown!
Jesus thou art all compassion,
pure, unbounded love thou art;
visit us with thy salvation;
enter every trembling heart.
Verse 2
Breathe, O breathe thy loving Spirit
into every troubled breast!
Let us all in thee inherit;
let us find that second rest.
Take away our bent to sinning;
Alpha and Omega be;
end of faith, as its beginning,
set our hearts at liberty.
Verse 3
Come, Almighty to deliver,
let us all thy life receive;
suddenly return and never,
nevermore thy temples leave.
Thee we would be always blessing,
serve thee as thy hosts above,
pray and praise thee without ceasing,
glory in thy perfect love.
Verse 4
Finish, then, thy new creation;
pure and spotless let us be.
Let us see thy great salvation
perfectly restored in thee;
changed from glory into glory,
till in heaven we take our place,
till we cast our crowns before thee,
lost in wonder, love, and praise.
Congregational Prayer & Lord's Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
forever. Amen.
Maker in Whom We Live UM 88 (Charles Wesley)
Verse 1
Maker, in whom we live,
in whom we are and move,
the glory, power, and praise
receive for Thy creating love.
Let all the angel throng
give thanks to God on high,
while earth repeats the joyful song
and echoes to the sky.
Verse 2
Incarnate Deity,
let all the ransomed race
render in thanks their lives
to Thee for Thy redeeming grace.
The grace to sinners showed
ye heavenly choirs proclaim,
and cry, Salvation to our God,
salvation to the Lamb!
Verse 3
Spirit of Holiness,
let all Thy saints adore
Thy sacred energy,
and bless Thine heart-renewing power.
No angel tongues can tell
Thy love's ecstatic height,
the glorious joy unspeakable,
the beatific sight.
Verse 4
Eternal, Triune God,
let all the hosts above,
let all on earth below
record and dwell upon Thy love.
When heaven and earth are fled
before Thy glorious face,
sing all the saints Thy love hath made
thine everlasting praise.
Scripture Reading
Luke 18:9-14 (NRSV) [Read in Context]
9He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and regarded others with contempt: 10Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11The Pharisee, standing by himself, was praying thus,
God, I thank you that I am not like other people: thieves, rogues, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of all my income.
13But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven but was beating his breast and saying, God, be merciful to me, a sinner!
14I tell you, this man went down to his home justified rather than the other, for all who exalt themselves will be humbled, but all who humble themselves will be exalted.
The word of God for the people of God.
All: Thanks be to God!

What Does the Lord Require? (Nelson)
Follow along with Choir - click to expand
Verse 1
What does the Lord require
for praise and offering?
What sacrifice, desire, or tribute
bid you bring?
Chorus
To do justice;
love mercy;
and walk humbly,
humbly with your God;
walk humbly,
walk humbly with your God.
Verse 2
Rulers of earth, give ear!
Should you not justice know?
Will God your pleading hear,
while crime and cruelty grow?
Chorus
To do justice;
love mercy;
and walk humbly,
walk humbly with your God;
walk humbly with your God.
Bridge
How shall our life,
how shall our life fulfill,
fulfill God's law so high?
Let Christ,
let Christ endue our will,
let Christ endue our will
with grace.
Verse 3
How shall our life,
how shall our life fulfill God's law?
What does the Lord require?
What does the Lord require
for praise and offering?
What sacrifice, desire, or tribute
bid you bring?
Chorus
To do justice;
love mercy;
and walk humbly,
walk humbly with your God;
walk humbly,
walk humbly with your God.
Do justice;
love mercy;
walk humbly with your God.
Walk humbly with your God.
Benediction and Closing Hymn
Forth in Thy Name, O Lord UMH 438 (Charles Wesley)
Verse 1
Forth in Thy name, O Lord, I go,
my daily labor to pursue;
Thee, only Thee, resolved to know
in all I think or speak or do.
Verse 2
The task Thy wisdom hath assigned,
O let me cheerfully fulfill;
in all my works Thy presence find,
and prove Thy good and perfect will.
Verse 3
Thee may I set at my right hand,
Whose eyes mine inmost substance see,
and labor on at Thy command,
and offer all my works to Thee.
Verse 4
For Thee delightfully employ
what e'er thy bounteous grace hath given;
and run my course with even joy,
and closely walk with Thee to heaven.
This morning's altar flowers are given in celebration of Kirk and Polly Braun's 44th wedding anniversary.
